The most useful thing to know before buying a lock isn’t the brand — it’s the ANSI grade. Grade 1 is commercial-grade and the most resistant to forced entry (kicking, prying, drilling), Grade 2 is a solid residential step up from builder-grade, and Grade 3 is what most new-construction homes ship with by default. If you’ve never checked, there’s a decent chance your front door deadbolt is Grade 3, and upgrading it is one of the cheapest security improvements available.
Mechanical vs. Smart Locks: The Real Tradeoff
A traditional deadbolt has no battery to die and nothing to hack remotely — its weakness is purely physical, which is exactly what the ANSI grade measures. A smart lock adds real convenience (remote access, codes for guests or cleaners, activity logs) but introduces new failure points: a dead battery locking you out, a Wi-Fi outage disabling remote features, or in Miami specifically, humidity and salt air degrading the electronics and keypad contacts faster than they would inland. If you go with a smart lock on an exterior door, a physical key override is worth having as a backup regardless of what the marketing says about not needing one.
The Strike Plate Matters As Much As the Lock
A high-security deadbolt installed into a flimsy, short-screwed strike plate is still a weak point — the strike plate is what actually anchors the bolt into the door frame, and a kick to the door tests the frame and screws as much as the lock itself. Reinforced strike plates with 3-inch screws that reach the stud behind the frame are inexpensive and make a real difference, but they’re the part most DIY lock upgrades skip.
Match the Lock to the Door
Exterior doors should get a Grade 1 or 2 deadbolt at minimum. Sliding glass doors — common throughout South Florida — need a secondary lock or track bar beyond the factory latch, which isn’t a real security lock on its own. Interior doors rarely need more than a basic knob or lever, so it’s not worth spending high-security budget there.
